  1. Banning Cell Phone Usage while driving?

    06/28/08 14:49:02 | 2 Comments

So... um.. yeah... Hi! It's been a while since my last blog. It just so happens a post made at the community I administrate (plug plug) inspired me to write this new entry. Warning: It's quite explicit! image

So are you one of those morons I see driving around town with one hand glued to your cell phone? Asshole! Get the hell off already. What did you do 15 years ago when cell phones weren't around? How is life that much urgent than years ago when you didn't use a cell phone? Why is it suddenly necessary that you must talk on your phone at any given moment of the day just because it's there?

Okay, okay! You pay the bill. It's a convenience, so you use it. But let me tell you something. There are times you just need to back away from the cell phone and shut the damn thing off.

    1. Driving!! Seriously, what's the point? You cannot tell me that life has suddenly became that urgent for you to be talking on the phone while driving. Pull the fuck over if you have an emergency. Don't endanger others just because you've learned little Susie just got her first period. Besides, she'll have others!!

    2. On public transportation. Please! I didn't board a plain, train, bus, or tram to the peaceful mountains to hear some fuckwad such as yourself to gab to your brother Joey about how he got the crabs! Use your noodle people!! No one wants to be sitting next to you while you pour out your drab day to your ailing mother who you just put in a nursing home, drawing her last breath. Shit, your mother doesn't even want to hear it... hear the heart monitor go flat?? Have some respect for people around you.

    3. Movie Theatres. I swear some people are just dumb, deaf, blind and stupid. Most theatres now have messages (even video messages) asking you to turn off your fuckin' phone during the film. But no, there is always some damn Goober eatin' bitch within a few rows from me, taking calls like she's the secretary for the Jerry Springer show. Please bitch! No one cares to hear about your best friend who just made out with your sister's best friend's dog name "Woofie". (Okay, so I stole that last line from a Weird Al song. So sue me!!)

The point is... when has life become so urgent for us to suddenly have cell phones on us all the time? I remember not too long ago that when Aunt Tom was being rushed to the hospital and you were out and about having fun with either Dick or Vargina or both, it was nearly impossible to inform you that Aunt Tom just had a stroke. By the time that you got the call about Aunt Tom... Aunt Tom was dead!! (Oh wait, maybe that isn't a good example!)

Okay, let me just put it this way. Shut the fuckin' cell phone off already!! Thank you! image

  2. Cut Corners My Ass!!!

Cut corners, my ass!! For over two years, Madonna has been given grief about using her celebrity status to getting a quickie adoption. Some have merely dismissed as nothing more than an attention seeking shopping trip when it's clearly more than that. Not even Angela Jolie has been given such grief when she adopted her children.

Back in 2006, when Madonna visited a visited an orphanage in a small African Malawian country, she instantly connected with an 18 month Malawian boy who she discovered was deathly ill. Her intention was to get him medical help, instead she did even more and decided to start a grueling process of trying to adopt him. Meanwhile, the media and critics criticized and rights activists tried to prevent her from adopting, claiming she was avoiding the laws of Malawi which usually prevents non-citizens of adopting. Not only that, the media swooped in, harassing the true father of the boy, who gave the child up for adoption after his wife and family all died of aids.

Finally after much delay, on Wednesday, a Malawian court finally granted Madonna and her family adoption rights to their new son David, who has been living with her for almost 2 years now. During this whole process, Madonna has had people come into her home, to prove she and her family are fit to adopt. Also, like Oprah Winfrey in other African communities, she's donated millions of dollars to improving the orphanages, medical centers and schools in Malawi.

Madonna has stated in numerous interviews regarding being accused of trying to cut corners in the adoption process that it's just all nonsense and stated, "if so, why has it taken this long to finalize the adoption?" And she's right, it's only because she's this huge celebrity that some decided to give her a hard time when they should be thanking her for saving this boy's life. The fact is; if Madonna didn't try to adopt David, he would have been dead by now. It's amazing to me how people will try to twist this as if Madonna has done something awful when in reality she went out of her way to go to a country she never knew existed until a few years ago, pour millions of dollars to improve conditions (and still does) and adopt an ailing child, saving his life from a country which is hit badly by the AIDS epidemic.

Madonna has been back to Malawi multiple times and has documented the impoverish conditions in a new film she narrated and produced called "I Am because We are". She has been in Cannes last week promoting this film. As mentioned, a few years ago, Madonna didn't even know where this country was located when received a phone call, asking for help. The woman who called became frustrated and hung up on Madonna when Madonna asked "where is Malawi?" Madonna has stated, she could have easily dismissed this call, but decided to do research and here we are several years later, putting her pride aside, helping humanity. Now, isn't this what we've been asking celebrities to do? Rather than just boast about their stardom, put their money and celebrity status to use by taking on real causes and issues??

Congrats to Madonna and her family!!
  3. The 4:30 a.m. Shake Up Call!!

    04/20/08 10:04:57 | 1 Comments

No alarm clock or hotel desk clerk could deliver the wake up call that I got Friday April 18th, 2008 at 4:38 a.m. It was a surreal experience and the first time I recall ever being shakin' out of bed in such a manner.

I'm one of those Illinoisans who felt the 5.2 earthquake. I didn't know what it was at first. I live about a quarter of a mile from some rail road tracks and when trains come roaring through, it's usual to feel the house rattle and shake. But this wasn't the same! Besides, there was no roar of the train that followed the rumble.

At least 4 other aftershocks were reported throughout the morning. One of them was measured at 4.5. I had been standing out in a hall at work when some came from other areas, asking if we had just felt a slight vibration. I hadn't, but didn't doubt others did.

Minor damage was reported, but as many as 7 area states supposedly felt the early morning shake. No one was hurt, thank goodness!!

Now, I may say that it's not normal for Illinois to get earthquakes, but we do get them. In fact, we're on one of the biggest known fault lines in the U.S. called the New Madrid. For years, experts have predicted we're due for a huge quake. The last three quakes that measured over the magnitude of 8 in this are was in the winter of 1811-12 leveling virtually every home within 250 miles of the New Madrid fault line. Damage was reported as far away as Charleston, South Carolina, and Washington, D.C.

So while Friday's quake did very little damage, it is possible that we will be feeling aftershocks for days, weeks or months to come. And who knows, this 5.2 magnitude earthquake may be a preview of a bigger one to come.

The last tremor/quake I recall was in the early 80's. It was brief. Others have occurred since then. But none has measured close to the magnitude of Friday's.

  4. Who Knew I had a Carpenter in me?

A couple of weeks ago, I recorded a cover of The Carpenters' "Close To You". You can currently hear it on my profile's jukebox (2nd song!). Now, I am not particularly a fan of The Carpenters. But they have a couple nice classic songs. I was hoping to cover a "rock" song during this session, but the old voice wasn't up to it, so I took on a sappy ballad instead. LOL!

I layered a few vocals. You'll hear a couple lower layered voices as well as a high one in the background. (Trust me, listening to just the high one alone without the lower voices... it was plain awful.) It's amazing how nice a song comes together when you layer the voices.

I'm pretty happy how the track turned out. It was a quick song to record. I was expecting it to sound really bad, but it's a nice listen. Am I ready for the pros? Probably not!!! LOL!

  5. A True Gem!

    02/28/08 16:38:26 | 0 Comments

Two years ago, I met a lovely and magnificent woman in NYC who was battling cancer. She didn't take her friends, family and life for granted at all. She fought like hell to battle her illness. Did she complain? No. She even continued to work and live her daily life like the rest of us. She was a fun gal who had a huge bright smile.

The day I met her, she introduce me to new food and took me on a private tour of her job. It wasn't just any job; it was a job with a huge media giant that handles publication for many popular magazines. It was definitely a highlight of my NYC trip.

Unfortunately, I've been informed that she's home receiving hospice care and may not have long to live. This saddens me because all I see is a beautiful woman who had a beautiful smile and a great outlook on life.

I will never forget her for as long as I live. She is definitely proof why no one should substitute anything for the real deal and you should appreciate all the good things you have in your life. She is a true gem. She's more superior than any huge carat diamond. After all, some diamonds can be fake and before you know it, you're stuck with a cubic zirconia.

It's just amazing in this day and age, we've yet to find a cure for cancer. We've come a long way, but we've yet come close to eradicating the big C.

My thoughts will be with my friend.
