I suspect many of us have cell phones and are signed to a contract with the carrier of our choice. And while I understand we have plenty of choices to choose
from, I am annoyed at the fact that most of these phone carriers lock you into a contract for as much as two years.
I am currently with Verizon. I've been with them since having a cell phone. I've never had an issue with them. Though, I've always been uncomfortable in signing up for their service under a contract which charges you a hefty fee if you break that contract. I mean; what's the purpose? They get a monthly charge out of us anyway. What happened to the days that you are no longer happy with the service or just no longer can afford their service and want to just cancel and that's that!! But NOOO, these days if you cancel, you are slapped with a hefty fine. And what if someone canceling is doing so because they no longer can afford their service and going through hard times? No doubt, these days that's a great possibility. So what makes these phone carriers think that if these people can't afford their monthly service, that they are going to be able to afford to pay a cancellation fees as much as $175. Why can't someone just cancel just because they don't want the service anymore whether they are happy or not with the service??
I also heard that if you do cancel and refuse to pay their cancellation fee, it will go on your credit rating and it could black ball you from getting any other phone service.
I bring this up because I waited almost a year to renew my contract with Verizon. They bugged the shit out of me to renew a contract with them. They also bugged me for just as long that I was due for a discount on a new phone of my choice. So this past April, I decided to break down and buy a Smart Phone with a PC on it. And I am somewhat fine with it, but I wish I waited a little longer now and just bought an Iphone. Virtually, it's the same thing... though my phone has a better megapixel on it than the newest Iphone has.
Part of me wants to break that contract, but I don't want to have to pay $175 to do so. And then I have this phone I bought a couple months which would be useless.
To add to that... I hear AT&T is losing its exclusivity with Iphone and that they may be going to Verizon. This could be good news for me. So I guess in the end, I should ride it out to see what happens.
Meanwhile, I am still annoyed that these phone carriers lock you in a contract for a year or two and if you dare go AWOL, you are penalized.
